Assorted backgrounds and in-game art from Crossed Swords, developed by ADK and released in 1990 for the Neo-Geo. Crossed Swords had a great premise. but a flawed execution. It was a third person over the shoulder swordfighting fantasy, which sounds great on paper, but fights—especially boss fights—quickly become a grueling ordeal of repetition. Regardless of the gameplay, though, the game had some lovely background design and wasn’t afraid to hit you with some diverse color contrasts. Note that the pan-up castle approach shot seen here doesn’t rip off Magus’ Castle in Chrono Trigger, since it predates that game by five years.
